Cabbage is one of the vegetables that many low carb eaters often glance over and overlook. That is a real shame because not only is it delicious, it is also incredibly cheap! Cabbage is also in season so I decided to pick one up at the store on my way home the other day. I needed something to make that was quick, easy and delicious.
When I got home, I browsed around and came upon a recipe from Reddit where the poster called it “My uncles fire house colon blow recipe”. This was not the greatest name choice, but I decided to tweak the recipe and make it.
The cabbage bowl turned out absolutely incredible. It is hard to describe the taste, but it is like the noodles of the keto world. This quickly became a staple in my diet. Feel free to add any other spices you want or maybe some cheese!
Low Carb Cabbage Meat Bowl Instructions
To begin, grab a large pot (you really need a large one to fit all the cabbage). Place it over medium heat. You can either melt some butter or do as I did and cook with the fats in the meat.
Take your pound of pork sausage and place that in your pot. Brown it on either side and break it up just like cooking ground beef for tacos.
Once your pork sausage has been browned, cut up your bacon into bite size chunks and add it in.
Stir the ground pork together with the bite size pieces of bacon and cook it over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how well you want the bacon to be done. Take this time to shred up your cabbage while you are waiting.
After a few minutes of cooking, your cabbage bowl should start to take place. Now you need to add the cabbage, the star ingredient! You should have already cut it up by now, but if you have not, shred up your head of cabbage and put it in your pot.
As you can see, I had a hard time fitting it all in my pot. This is why you should ensure you have a large enough device that will allow you to stir.
Stir it all up so the cabbage is mixed well into the meats. You will then want to turn down the heat to low and cover it. Cook it for about 10 minutes on low until the cabbage is tender.
After 10 minutes, add your spices! I seasoned to taste but I think what really made this POP was a spice called Kick’n Chicken. If you cannot find that in your local store, you can either buy it online or use crushed red pepper.
Spice List To Taste
- Salt
- Pepper
- Kick’n Chicken (or crushed red pepper)
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
You need to be mindful about how much garlic powder and onion powder you add to the bowl. These are going to add carbs to the dish so if you are being very strict, keep these to a minimum and use more of the kick’n chicken seasoning.
Stir the pot once more with all the seasonings added and cook for 5 more minutes. After that, serve it up in a bowl and enjoy!
You can add cheese if you wish or any other seasonings. Play around with it and see what you come up with. This makes enough to eat by yourself for days!

It’s great. The combination of cabbage and pork with garlic and onion would be an ideal choice on a low-carb diet. Gonna try it tomorrow!
